The Importance of Light in Decoration

We explain the importance of using artificial light well in the interiors of the houses and how using it badly can completely ruin the decoration.

When thinking about the decoration of a house, attention is paid to a series of details such as textiles in the case of rooms (sheets, cushions, rugs, etc.) or any other decorative object such as a painting. or a vase. It is also an important decision when choosing the colors of the walls in each of the rooms due to the great influence that these have on the sensations that are transmitted and how a house speaks of itself.

Surely something that is also looked at when decorating are the lamps but, erroneously, the main factor that leads to decisions is more the form than the type of lighting. Although you also have to choose for the taste and how it can be with the rest of the decoration, how the room lights up directly influences everything in the room : from the colors, the textiles, to the feeling that the room itself transmits. room to make them cozy or quite the opposite.

In this article we will talk about the importance of light in the decoration of a house through the different types of light according to the function they play as well as some tricks to take into account to achieve different solutions when lighting.

Natural light

This is the best option when lighting a room in the house, being the one that will give more life to the interiors and making them more welcoming to carry out any type of activity. For them it is important to pay special attention to the windows and, more specifically, to their size and orientation, even going so far as to determine the distribution of the furniture and decoration , as well as the colors and materials.

Artificial light

But, of course, natural light is not constant either in the hours or in its quality, which will vary throughout the day. For this same reason it will be necessary to complement any room with artificial light through lamps . The flattering thing about this lighting is that it will be totally controlled by us , being able to do whatever we want with it. But something to keep in mind is that the light is much more than an on or off switch. If the right lamps are not chosen for a room in a house, what will be achieved will be a poorly lit space, thus ruining all the good that there may be in terms of decoration. That is why special attention must be paid, so below we present the different types of light that can be used.

Types of light

In both natural and artificial light we can find different types of ‘color’ , from warm to cold through neutral. In the case of natural light, this will occur naturally depending on the weather itself and the time of day; while in the artificial we can play as best we can. Warm light is considered to be one that basically tends to a reddish or orange color ; while the cold is more bluish . As for ours , we would be talking about a white color.

We can also talk about different types depending on the shape of the light halo . On the one hand there would be the directional (also punctual) , which is characterized by a concentrated beam and which is directed to a specific point. To achieve this, the lamps that provide this type of light are characterized by having an opaque screen (so that the light only comes out through the opening) and that they are reflective inside (in this way the beam is further enhanced). On the totally opposite side we would find the diffuse, in which the light beam is more open so that it spreads throughout the room, creating a kind of bubble all around the lamp. In this case, the lampshades are made of translucent material, which allows them to project light in this way.

Colors

The combination of lighting and colors is very important, because the colors are a result of the level of light they absorb and that they reflect , so that depending on one type of lamp or another they can vary a lot , making the color totally different or we do not get the one we are really looking for even if we have bought the correct paint.

Five points of light

When it comes to lighting, there is a rule according to decorators that says that for a room to be properly lit it must have at least five points of light , so that it will gain vitality. Also being a bit realistic, many times getting five is complicated, so it is recommended that there be at least two : a general light and another point source that will be consistent with the activity that takes place in the specific room. To achieve this, a combination of the options explained below can be done.

Lamp orientation

Towards the ceiling : This consists of pointing the beam of light directly upwards, which will make it bounce off the surface and the lighting will be more diffuse . This is common when you want to create a larger environment or highlight the height of the ceilings, thus ending the shaded area in the upper part.

Directed light : If there is a particular part of a room that you want to stand out more than the rest , the place to turn is much simpler and more elegant to highlight through the light.

Complementary lights : many times it is necessary that in certain areas there is a directed light because good visibility is needed. This generates, as already explained, is a strong contrast of lights and shadows. To eradicate this, what can be done is to place a source of diffuse lighting next to it, so that that area in shadow is reduced but without subtracting the strength that the specific area of direct lighting needs.

Therefore, the best option is to place lamps at different levels . In this way, if in the same room you place different points of light (as is recommended) and these are at different levels, you will create a much more dynamic type of lighting, which you can use as one more element when playing with the decoration.
